Steve Scalise was upgraded from critical to serious condition Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice Wednesday outside Washington.

Scalise underwent another surgery on Saturday and "continues to show signs of improvement", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement.

The person told The Associated Press that investigators aren't sure of the significance of the names and don't know if it was a list of people he was targeting.

Before the additional surgery Saturday, doctors had focused on repairing extensive damage to the blood vessels in Scalise's abdomen, which was riddled by scores of bullet fragments. The Del Ray Service Center is known as a "neutral zone" of sorts when it comes to politics; lawmakers of both parties take their cars there."His whole tone and composure changed", Dauberman said.

U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) was among five wounded, including the suspected gunman, in the attack as Republican Congressional members practiced for a charity baseball game.

The House of Representatives majority whip underwent another operation on Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with his family. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers".

Scalise, 51, spoke while lying injured on the ball field but went into shock when he was transported by helicopter to the hospital in the District of Columbia.

Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House Republican aide Zack Barth, were also injured in the shooting.

Law enforcement officials have said they found a list of Republican lawmakers' names on the body of James Hodgkinson, who apparently had been in the Washington area for several months stalking his targets. He arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at the hospital, said Friday.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized.

Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against United States president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers.
