Exit polls show Macron wins solid majority
French voters gave President Emmanuel Macron's upstart party a solid victory in Sunday's parliamentary election, handing the centrist a strong mandate to reshape French politics and overhaul the country's restrictive labour laws.
Marine Le Pen, Mr Macron's far-right rival in the final round of the presidential election, has won a seat in parliament for the first time.
According to preliminary data cited by BFMTV, the National Front may count on from four to six seats in the National Assembly, which is not enough to form a faction as it requires at least 15 seats.
France's youngest leader since Napoleon, Macron emerged from relative obscurity to score a thumping win in the presidential election in May.
"We shall fight with all our strength the harmful projects of the government, which is only in place to implement the roadmap sent by Brussels".
"The president of the Republic has all the powers", Jean-Christophe Cambadelis said after announcing he would step down as Socialist Party chief.
Macron's party, which didn't exist 14 months ago and offered novice candidates from civilian life for many seats, drew from both the left and right to fill its ranks, effectively blurring the country's traditional political divide. Cambadelis was knocked out of the running for parliament in last week's first round of voting.
But turnout stood at a record low of around 44 percent, leading opposition leaders to claim he had no groundswell of support. Jean-Luc Mélenchon's far-left party will likely claim between 10-20 seats after accounting for 11% of the vote in the first round.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, a centre-right politician who joined Mr Macron's movement, said "through their vote, a wide majority of the French have chosen hope over anger".
The voting system punishes parties outside the mainstream, or with no mainstream allies, like Le Pen's National Front.
Pollsters say that after routing traditional parties in last week's first-round vote, Macron's Republic on the Move! party could win up to 450 seats Sunday in the 577-seat National Assembly, the powerful lower chamber.
With its allies from MoDem centrist party, it is represented by 360 lawmakers, sparing the need to rely on other movements to pass legislation on labour codes, cut public expenditure by billions of euros, raise taxes on consumption and wealthy pensioners and invest more in training and innovative sectors.
