The head of state said a saddened country was showing resolve in the face of adversity and a determination to rebuild lives wrecked by "terrible" tragedy.

Her message follows an evening of protests in Kensington, where the fire took place, and outside Downing Street, where angry crowds shouted "May must go".

Addressing the British people on her official birthday, Queen Elizabeth wrote of a "very sombre national mood" following a "succession of bad tragedies" that have befallen the British people over the last number of months. Emergency workers have reached the top of the 24-story tower.

Services on the London Tube railway line that runs above ground close to the tower were suspended Saturday due to the "short-term risk of some debris falling onto the tracks", London Fire Brigade said.

Green said the government would pay for residents' legal representation at the inquiry and reiterated May's promise to rehouse those displaced by the fire within three weeks as close as possible to home. London Mayor Sadiq Khan wrote a letter to Prime Minister May urging her to do more.

The queen marked her official birthday Saturday by saying Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester.

She said her visits to London and Manchester -- the latter the site of a terror attack last month - have highlighted the people who offer comfort and support those affected.

Commander Stuart Cundy of London Metropolitan Police says the death toll from the fire has risen to 58. At least 30 people were killed in the London apartment building blaze, with many more still missing.

Grief over a high-rise tower blaze that killed dozens of people turned to outrage Friday amid suggestions that materials used in a recent renovation project may have contributed to the disaster.

She also met victims of the Manchester bombing being treated in hospital following the attack after an Ariana Grande concert in which 22 people died in May.

The UK has promised a full public inquiry, and announced a fund of 5 million British pounds ($6.4 million) to help those affected by the blaze.

Scuffles broke out near the Kensington and Chelsea town hall offices Friday as demonstrators chanting "We want justice!" surged toward the doors.

"Victims have concerns their voice will not be heard, that their many questions about this tragedy will not be answered".
