Heavy rain, winds, tornado warnings as Cindy heads inland

25 June 2017, 03:16 | Latoya Patrick

Tropical Storm Cindy is already impacting the MidSouth, even though the tangible effects of the storm have yet to reach it.

A storm surge of 1 to 3 feet above ground level is expected along the coast in portions of the Tropical Storm Warning area.

Flooding and road closures stretched from east Texas into northwestern Florida after Cindy made landfall early on Thursday near the Louisiana-Texas border and weakened to a tropical depression, the National Weather Service said.

Cindy made landfall in Louisiana with wind speeds of up to 40 miles an hour on Wednesday.

The Chambersburg area is expected to receive about 1.4 inches of rain.

A 10-year-old boy died Wednesday in Fort Morgan, Alabama, when he was struck by a log that was being carried by a wave, the Baldwin County sheriff's office said. Some roads were covered with water in the seafood village of Bayou La Batre, but Becca Caldemeyer still managed to get to her bait shop open at the city dock.

So there are many reasons to think Cindy will bring us a period of showers starting Thursday evening and extending as late as Saturday morning, but that it will not bring the Roanoke and New River valleys and Southwest Virginia extreme flooding that often occurs here with the inland remnants of tropical systems. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday evening. Officials there decided against calling an evacuation but said in a statement that anyone who wanted to head for the mainland should do so as early as possible because water might eventually cover low-lying parts of the only route off the island.

The center of the storm hit just south of Lake Charles, Louisiana, the National Weather Center's Hurricane Center said.

They say the floating blobs contain all members of the colony, including worker ants, winged reproductive males and females, and queen ants.

The U.S. Storm Prediction Center said severe storms pose a lingering threat from the Southeast into western Pennsylvania. Given the abundant moisture across the region, rain may be heavy at times, and meteorologists can not rule out localized flooding.

Forecasters are trying to determine how many tornadoes touched down in Alabama as remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy moved north from the Gulf Coast.

A liquor store and a fast-food restaurant were among the damaged businesses in Fairfield, Alabama, west of Birmingham, said meteorologist Jason Holmes of the National Weather Service.

Weather forecasters are expecting a third day of rough weather for Gulf Coast states as Tropical Storm Cindy approaches. A boy killed by debris in storm surf off Alabama was the only fatality reported so far in the storm, which spun off tornadoes and caused street flooding in many coastal areas. There were numerous reports of waterspouts and short-lived tornadoes spawned by the storm.
