Police investigate double homicide in Auburn

An off-duty police officer was shot by "friendly-fire" at the scene of a St. Louis stolen auto chase late Wednesday night.

Per department policy, seven officers will be placed on administrative leave.

The officer told investigators he feared for his safety and didn't recognize the fellow officer as one of their own, according to KTVI-TV.

The African American officer, who has not yet been identified, came outside of his home while off-duty after hearing the commotion from a vehicle chase that ended nearby. He complied with the order and as soon as the officers recognized him they told him to stand up and asked him to come toward them.

The city's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that officers were responding to a possible auto theft after a recognition software flagged a license plate.

According to The Post-Dispatch, police are calling the incident an example of "friendly fire" due to the suspects from the vehicle chase firing at police. The third remains at large. The chase went through various parts of St. Louis and wound up in a quiet neighborhood where the stolen vehicle crashed on the front lawn of the home of a Black off-duty officer.

The victim's lawyer, Rufus J Tate Jr, told local media that the shooting was part of a wider problem in the United States with the perception of black men.

The New York Daily News identities the off-duty officer as black and the shooting officer as white.

The 36-year-old officer who fired the shot is an 8-year department veteran.

Police are now saying that the unnamed 38-year-old, 11-year vet was injured by fellow colleagues in a separate incident away from the scene.

The injured officer was taken to the hospital and has since been released. Two officers "fearing for their safety" fired at the suspects and hit one in the ankle.

A year earlier in the suburb of White Plains, New York, a black off-duty Mount Vernon police officer was killed by a Westchester County policeman while holding an assault suspect at gunpoint. "We can see this is a real problem".

"This been a national discussion for the past two years".

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Friendly fire is blamed in the injury to a St. Louis police officer.

The shooting came days after protests swept Minnesota over the acquittal of a police officer who shot a black man dead in front of his girlfriend and daughter in an incident broadcast on Facebook Live.
