33% of MPs MLAs who will vote for India’s next president have criminal cases against them Survey

The indelible ink is being procured from Mysore Paints and Varnish Ltd. Votes of 12 MLAs from Congress and its allies were declared invalid because they had marked their preferences with a pen other than the one officially supplied by the poll staff, reports PTI. "When member come out of voting chamber special pen will be taken back by polling staff and would be handed over his/her pen if he/she was carrying", the note added.

The pens have been introduced following a controversy during voting in the Rajya Sabha polls in Haryana in September 2016. In June previous year, 12 votes during the RS polls from the state were marked using the wrong pen and were declared invalid after which the Congress party alleged that the original pen was "replaced". A total of four thousand 896 voters comprising 776 elected MPs and 4120 MLAs will be given a special marker to sign their ballot.

The presidential polls will be held on 17 July and the electoral college is made up of MPs and MLAs.

The panel has also permitted 14 Rajya Sabha members including Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Trinamool Congress' Derek O'Brien and Mukul Roy to vote in legislative assemblies. The ballot papers and boxes have also arrived and have been kept in the strong room.

Deka said two MLAs, Tarun Gogoi and Kamal Shing Narzary, will cast their votes in New Delhi.

The total number of elected MPs in Lok Sabha is 543 (excluding the two appointed by the President of India from Ango-Indian community).

Once the voting process is over, the ballot boxes will be taken to Delhi under tight security.

Further, Dinesh Trivedi, former Union Railway Minister, Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh are among the 41 Lok Sabha Members of Parliament who have been given permission to vote in their states by the EC for the Monday polls. Nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are not eligible.

The presidential election is witnessing a fight between NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind and Opposition candidate Meira Kumar.
