In this Associated Press photo, Park Sung-hyun of South Korea holds up the winner's trophy after capturing the US Women's Open at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, on July 16, 2017.
Park finished on 11-under 277 with Choi, who had double bogeyed the 16th, handed second place after Feng triple bogeyed the final hole to slip back to six under and a tie for fifth with Spain's Carlota Ciganda (70) and Jeongeun Lee of South Korea (71).
Yang, whose most recent of three US LPGA titles came at Thailand in February, has 16 top-10 major finishes without a victory. her nearest misses were runner-up efforts at the 2012 and 2015 US Women's Opens.
Protests were staged during the final round with United States president Donald Trump present at the course he owns.
All week long, Sung Hyun Park was in the shadows like a lioness stalking her prey.
In her US Women's Open debut a year ago, Park led by two shots after 36 holes but closed with back-to-back 74s and settled for a share of third.
"I did pretty well until the last hole", Feng said.
In the end, the 17-year-old amateur didn't become the youngest player to win a women's major.
"I look back, I should be happy actually about my result", she said, "because coming into this week I had no expectations at all".
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Scott McCarron shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 and took advantage of an uncharacteristic crash by three-time defending champion Bernhard Langer to win the Constellation Senior Players Championship in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Deadlocked for the lead with Choi, Park sank a six-foot birdie putt at the par-four 17th, the fourth and final birdie of the round on the day's hardest hole, then moments later chipped inches from the cup and tapped in at the par-five 18th.
South Koreans have won six of the past nine US Women's Open crowns and have a shock contender in teen prodigy Choi, trying to become the first amateur to win the US Women's Open in half a century.
"Well, it would be nice if I could get the money, but I think my primary goal was to come here and compete", Choi said.
She has played steady throughout the week, shooting 69-69-70 in the first three rounds. So fans gave me that nickname that I just focus on attack and aggressive.
Park helped her cause by finishing second among all players with an average of 256.2 yards off the tee, a necessity on a course that played Sunday at a robust 6,762 yards.
"The experience was definitely worth it, because based on that good experience that I had last year, I think I was able to garner the championship this year", Park said.
In her US Women's Open debut previous year, Park led by two shots after 36 holes but closed with back-to-back 74s and settled for a share of third.
Those wins set her up as one of the top five money earners on the tour, gaining her entry into the 2016 ANA Inspiration and US Women's Open. "At 18. I hit it really close and finally made a birdie".
Feng is a shot ahead of Amy Yang, who is five under, with world number one So Yeon Ryu a shot behind in third along with Lydia Ko. Yang curled in a long birdie putt at 17 to book her spot in the final pairing Sunday. It's a greater honor for me.
