Intel's push for petabyte SSDs requires a new kind of drive

Intel Teases New “Ruler” SSD Form Factor & Dual Port Enterprise SSDs

As part of the company's new non-volatile Optane memory system rollout, Intel first released its enterprise PCIe implementation for servers and a few days later, the firm unveiled its consumer-focused Optane Memory module. Sure, they're faster than ever, and platters have been usurped by solid state storage, allowing the drives to shrink dramatically in size, but the familiar boxy shape has been a constant.

Intel figures it's high time for a new form factor for drives. The new form factor delivers the most storage capacity for a server, with the lowest required cooling and power needs. Indeed, Intel says that it envisages a single 1U server as being able to hold 1PB (1 petabyte, or 1,000,000 GB). No word on dimensions or connectors, but it may end up using a standard SATA or U.2 SAS-enabled connector. Dual port Intel® SSD DC D4500, D4502 and D4600 Series will be available starting in 2017's third quarter. Intel thinks it has the solution, and its new high-capacity Optane SSDs and 3D NAND SSDs are taking on an all-new form factor that the company hopes will give it in edge in enterprise.

The company also unveiled a dual-port portfolio comprised of Optane and 3D NAND drives and an update to the SATA family of drives for data centers that's created to replace existing HDDs.

The Intel SSD DC S4500 and S4600 Series are said to combine a new Intel-developed SATA controller, SATA firmware and "the industry's highest density 32-layer 3D NAND". Intel's new line of second-generation 3D NAND SSDs is available now.

Intel's designed the technology so that it'll be easy to move from HDD to SSDs.

World's Most Advanced Dual Port Portfolio.

It's unlikely that we'll see a super long, skinny desktop computer on our desks anytime soon that'll accommodate the new drives.

That's highly unlikely to be a problem with Intel's ruler SSD. Samsung* drives evaluated - Samsung SSD PM1725a, Samsung SSD PM1725, Samsung PM963, Samsung PM953.
