Papaya recall

As of yesterday's most recent update the FDA states, "FDA, CDC, state, and local health officials continue to actively investigate the cases with papaya exposure and will provide updates as additional information becomes available".

Freshtex Produce, based in Alamo, TX, is voluntarily recalling Valery brand Maradol papayas grown and packed by Carica de Campeche, because of the potential of Salmonella contamination.

Thirty-six people in NY and 26 in New Jersey have been infected; the other 47 have been sickened in 12 other states.

States now affected include Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The FDA said it is working with Mexican food safety authorities to conduct inspections and other follow up activities, the AP reports.

The CDC said the likely source of the infected papayas have been linked to Maradol papayas, out of Mexico.

"However, the product may have been further distributed outside the state of IL", according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration's website.

No illnesses have been reported from the Maradol papayas Cavi brand.

The CDC warns that "consumers [should] not eat, restaurants not serve, and retailers not sell Maradol papayas from Mexico until we learn more". Boxes provided to wholesalers are stamped with CARICA DE CAMPECHE on the upper left side of the box.

"Consumers who may have purchased the Valery brand papayas are advised to dispose of them".

USA health officials say more people have contracted salmonella by eating papayas from a farm in southern Mexico.

It is also important for people who have had the salmonella papayas in their home to clean and disinfect any surfaces or utensils that the papaya could have been in contact with, as salmonella can spread easily.

Since 2011, papayas from Mexico have been screened at the border for salmonella under an import alert, but companies can request to be added to a "green" list after five straight shipments test negative, according to the FDA.

Friday morning FDA named the Carica de Campeche farm in Mexico as the source of several brands of papayas, including those distributed by Grande Produce and Agroson's, that tested positive for Salmonella.
