The decision was taken by the Karnataka Development Authority on Monday as it issued a notice to the regional heads of all banks - nationalized, grameena and private banks - mandating the knowledge of Kannada among bank employees of all ranks and divisions.
In a circular issued to the banks chairman of the KDA Prof S G Siddaramaiahsaid, "If employees who do not know Kannada fail to learn the language within six months, they should be relieved of their services in accordance with the recruitment rules".
Presently, banks have forms and challans in English and Hindi language.
However, now the group has demanded that not just at clerical level but also senior posts in the bank which is mostly occupied by staff from other states - should also learn Kannada.
"All information should be provided in Kannada so that people can conduct all the affairs in banking easily".
Stating that it was "necessary" for banks to transact in Kannada during their daily official functioning for the benefit of customers, especially for those from rural areas, Siddaramaiah said there are also the Reserve Bank of India guidelines in this regard.
"I have sensed that there has been a lack of will in implementing the local language in several banks. This has affected many poor and rural people", he said.
The organisation has given an ultimatum to all banks in Karnataka. "The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection clarifies in the banking application form that preference should be given to candidates who can speak local languages", KDA chairperson Professor SG Siddaramaiah said in the letter. My wife is also a bank employee, and she knows Kannada. Regular supervision will be done to see if the banks are implementing the rule properly. We have been informed that learning Kannada is compulsory.
