Longtime Syracuse football coach Dick MacPherson dies

Maine native, college, NFL coach Dick MacPherson dies

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick hit it off with Dick MaPherson nearly immediately because both were football people.

In his final five seasons with the Orange, MacPherson coached Syracuse to a 36-10-3 record.

Former New England Patriots coach Dick MacPherson has died at the age of 86, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Two coaches on Belichick's staff have ties to MacPherson: Running backs coach Ivan Fears worked with the Orange's wide receivers for MacPherson's full 10 years at SU.

MacPherson, who played college football at Springfield College, also led the Minutemen to four Yankee Conference championships (1971, 1972, 1974 and 1977) during his seven seasons at the helm of the program. He grew to love "Coach Mac" because as most people quickly found out, he was a heck of a great man.

MacPherson restored Syracuse to national prominence before heading to the Patriots.

I'm 29-years-old, so I'm not going to act like I'm well-versed on the career and legacy of Coach Mac. So, I knew Dick pretty well.

"He was just the greatest guy", Boeheim said. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia had spent time on the staffs of Paul Pasqualoni, who was MacPherson's linebackers coach from 1987-90. When you went to see Dick at Syracuse, you had to bring in a couple dozen doughnuts or he wouldn't let you in. I put myself under that category as well because of my work with all those guys. You had to go get them.
