Guam protected from N.Korea threat: United States rep

Guam residents nervous over N.Korea threat

Guam, a military hub in the Pacific, is about 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) south of Tokyo.

A Japanese defense paper and a USA media report said Tuesday that North Korea may have successfully produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles.

South Korea's unification ministry said Wednesday that the country was closely monitoring "possible provocation" from North Korea after it warned of preemptive missile strikes against the United States island of Guam in the Pacific.

"I've kind of felt this is a good thing", she said.

Calvo made the remark in a video message released Wednesday, pointing out that Guam is American soil and not just a military installation.

"Guam remains safe and I am confident in the ability of U.S. defences to protect our island and allies in the region", Bordallo said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, North Korea announced it was considering ballistic missile strikes near Guam, which hosts several USA military bases.

Guam has a THAAD missile defense system since the Obama administration, which is operated by the Army.

Guam's homeland security adviser, George Charfauros, said on Wednesday officials were confident "the US Department of Defense is monitoring this situation very closely and is maintaining a condition of readiness". Most recently, on Saturday, the UN Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted a resolution tightening the sanctions on North Korea.

Also from Barrigada, Charles Stake said, "We don't have the intelligence or data to really know what's going on and it appears from just general knowledge they have not minituarized the nuclear weapons yet so to hit Guam they're going to have to do that and I think we're prepared for at this point whatever they can send at us".

A travel agent on Guam said they haven't had a surge of customers seeking to book flights off the island.
