Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who spoke after the Prime Minister, however, expressed fear that the very foundation of India democracy was threatened by divisive forces.

On the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement, Modi asked the people to free the country of problems & create "new India" by 2022. "Such elements did not contribute in getting our country freedom".

"In the 1962 war (with China), we learnt a lesson that our forces have to be fully prepared. They are trying to impose their ideology on the country".

"A lot of atrocities were committed on the protesters during the Quit India Movement but no one stepped back".

At the main event held in August Kranti Maidan here, floral tributes were paid to the freedom fighters and those who laid down their lives in the struggle for India's Independence.

Commissioner & Secretary to Governor, Piyush Goyal, IAS, said the Quit India Movement was launched on August 1942, demanding an end to British Rule in India. The next five years should also be about Sankalp Se Siddhi, a resolve which will lead us to accomplishment, ” Modi said, adding, in the next five years, India must try to bring positive changes so that it can become inspiration for many other nations.

"We must not forget that some organisations have no role in Freedom struggle", Ms Gandhi said.

Reiterating Congress's oft-repeated attack on BJP-RSS for not being part of the freedom struggle, Sonia pointed to the contributions of Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Amid a border stand-off with China, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said India did learn lessons from the 1962 war and asserted that Indian armed forces can now meet any challenge. "Today, 75 years later the issues are different (sic)", he tweeted.

In August 1920, Gandhi and other leaders of the Congress Party began their campaign of non-cooperation with the British, which culminated in the country's independence in 1947, despite the harsh repression of London. "It seems secular, democratic and liberals values are being endangered".
