France orders national investigation amid Europe tainted egg scandal
About 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms implicated in a contamination scare have been distributed to Britain and some supermarket products have been withdrawn, the Food Standards Agency has said, quoted by the Guardian.
It said that 85 per cent of the eggs consumed in the United Kingdom were laid in the UK.
The FSAI said Fipronil is an insecticide which is not permitted for use around food producing animals, while noting that traceability on the eggs from the Netherlands contaminated with Fipronil was continuing.
The FSA admitted that "some of the products made from these eggs will have had a short shelf life and will have already been consumed, " but withdrew a list of over a dozen products - sandwiches and salads - from leading retailers Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda.
"Tests analysed in the Netherlands showed traces of fipronil in the eggs, but not at a level harmful to people's health".
In Romania - the country identified in media reports as where Belgium's Poultry-Vision bought its supply of fipronil - one tonne of egg yolk liquid contaminated with the insecticide was found.
If he is banned on animals intended for the food chain in the European Union, fipronil is commonly used against lice or ticks in pets.
The food authority did, however, ensure consumers that Danish eggs, which make up the majority of eggs sold in supermarkets in Denmark, were safe to eat.
FSA chairman Heather Hancock said she was "confident" that acting quickly was the right thing to do.
Fipronil is not permitted for use around food-producing animals like hens. However, Britain imports annually nearly 2 billion eggs, the the Agency.
More than 700,000 contaminated eggs have been shipped from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom, leading major supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Waitrose to urgently recall stocks of fresh sandwiches, quiche and salads.
The catering company Caterman has also processed two lots of fipronil-contaminated egg fluids, according to the government. In large quantities, it is considered "moderately toxic" to humans by the world health Organization (WHO), presenting a danger to the kidneys, the liver and the thyroid. The Netherlands closed 180 poultry farms as a result of the scare.
At the time there was no evidence that there were any acute food safety risks involved.
Aldi said it was "purely precautionary" and added that those sold in its United Kingdom outlets are produced in Britain.
