Several hundred people were peacefully marching through downtown. "President Trump needs to take a break from the golf course and denounce these hate rallies immediately with clear and strong language".

On May 13, noted white nationalist Richard Spencer led protesters with torches in a Charlottesville rally against the planned removal of Confederate statues in the city. It remains unclear if the driver of the vehicle has been apprehended.

Sen. Bernie Sanders wrote, "The white nationalist demonstration in #Charlottesville is a reprehensible display of racism and hatred that has no place in our society".

Kessler further claimed that "hundreds of people have been put out of their accommodations" by Airbnb's decision, a number that the company has declined to confirm.

Some of the white nationalists cited Trump's victory as validation for their beliefs.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have called for peace. "These rights belong to the "Unite the Right" activists who will express their beliefs, and to the many others who disagree with them".

"White supremacists have descended upon Charlottesville again to evoke a reaction as ugly and violent as their beliefs", he said.

He blamed Charlottesville officials for cancelling the rally. Virginia State Police is leading the Commonwealth's planning and response for these events and will be on the scene in a support capacity before, during and after the planned rally.
