Usain Bolt Suffers Injury in Final Career Race

Justin Gatlin stuns Usain Bolt to win 100m world title

Anchoring Jamaica in the final of the 4x100 metre relay at the World Championships, Bolt pulled up with a leg injury down the home straight as he took the baton in third place and with plenty of work to do.

Bolt said his emotions were still in check at the thought of bowing out of track and field.

Having gone through their meticulous warm ups, the teams were made to wait as the medal presentations for the men's 5000 metres and women's high jump were carried out.

It was the third member of the quartet, Julian Forte, who articulated how they were feeling. Inside it was cold.

"We keep warming up and waiting, then warming up and waiting".

The US were joined in a battle for first by Britain, and Mitchell-Blake showed sensational pace to get to the line first, with Bolt pulling up before dropping to the deck.

"They must know that it is silly and we are not used to these conditions". The sporting world went to bed without a word from their hero.

Blake said: "I'm very distraught". He was saying he was sorry, but there was nothing to be sorry for, he's done it for us (during his career). The race was 10 minutes later.

It was a tough week for Bolt, who took bronze in his final 100m solo race.

"I think it was the elements". I hope he gets well soon.

"I gave it everything", he told the crowd in a stadium interview before a montage played of his career highlights and fan messages, according to the IAAF. "It was pretty drafty, and I lost all my sweat and body heat. In the 100m straining to try to finish and now we see him limping".

"It was a recipe (for possible injury)". It's a little chilly in here so I think that's where the cramp came from. That's what he (Bolt) suffered with.

He said: "You can't really have this night or championship define what he's done in the past".

It was also Bolt's first-ever loss in an Olympic or world championship semifinal.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at some of the tributes which have been paid to the 30-year-old.

"Nobody wants to see a sportsman of that standing like this". All of us up here have been inspired by his career in some way.

Gemili, controversially overlooked for selection in the individual 200m, said: "We just ran our hearts out, we had so much passion and the crowd just gave us an extra lift".

While the team consisting Aaliyah Brown, Allyson Felix, Morolake Akinosun and Tori Bowie helped U.S. clinch a medal, it was a moment for Felix to cherish in particular as the win helped her surpass the likes of Usain Bolt (14 medals) and Merlene Ottey in terms of overall medals. How do you replace him - as a sports star and a human being?
