The Brown County Health Department is urging people to take precautions when mosquitoes might be out, after confirming the first human case of West Nile Virus in the county this year.

Public Health manager Bob Hart says it's a trend that mirrors patterns being seen in health units across Ontario.

A person has tested positive for West Nile virus in the Grey Bruce area.

If you're anxious about West Nile Virus, you might want to take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

Visit the DCPH West Nile virus website at for additional information including frequently asked questions, the latest news, and facts about WNV.

West Nile virus was identified in two local mosquito batches starting July 18. "County mosquito control officials regularly monitor the mosquito species to identify West Nile activity and direct mosquito spraying operations to reduce the risk to the human and horse populations".

About one in five people who become infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

Approximately 80 per cent of those infected with WNV do not show any symptoms.

Eastern equine encephalitis causes inflammation of the brain tissue and has a significantly higher risk of death in horses than West Nile Virus infection, according to the agriculture officials. "Using insect repellent, covering bare skin and avoiding being outdoors during the hours of dusk and dawn are effective ways to help keep you from being bitten by mosquitoes".
