Buckeyes and Irish to Play Home-and-Home After Tournament Cancellation

Buckeyes, Sooners prepare for early showdown

Is No. 2 Ohio State set to have an easy win at home when it takes on No. 5 Oklahoma tonight at 7:30PM ET?

Series history: Ohio State leads 2-1. The Buckeyes weren't as creative in their play-calling, didn't have almost as many chunk plays and were beaten by a better offense.

Oklahoma notes: The Sooners have three Ohioans on the roster: linebacker Emmanuel Beal, of Everest High School in Columbus; offensive lineman Alex Dalton, of Troy; and walk-on long snapper Kasey Kelleher, of Woodridge High School in Peninsula. In the receiving end, Parris Campbell caught for 136 yards and a touchdown in six receptions while Johnnie Dixon added 65 yards in two catches.

The Sooners would get a stop and so would Ohio State. What other players should Buckeye fans be concerned about on either side of the ball? They took down IN in Bloomington 49-21 behind senior quarterback J.T. Barrett. Meyer was asked if he would consider a change in quarterbacks, and he had a one-word answer: "No". The Buckeyes won 45-24 at Oklahoma previous year and went on to make the College Football Playoff while the Sooners have won 11 straight since that setback.

Ohio State couldn't maintain the momentum on offense.

"We were just out of rhythm", offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said. "But right now, we're really focused on this year's record and doing what we have to do to go win every week and go undefeated, if that's possible".

Mayfield was sharp again, hitting 27 of 35 passes and tossing TD passes to Dimitri Flowers, Lee Morris and Trey Sermon.

"It was very bad", Meyer said. "It's part of the system and a group that have to get better". "He played extremely well tonight, especially against a defense as good as them". But OU didn't stop there, scoring on a three-yard touchdown run by senior wide receiver Jordan Smallwood. The freshman starred in the opener with 181 yards and carried 13 times for 72 yards in this one. It did not punt in the first two quarters and advanced into OSU territory on all five of its drives but had only a field goal to show for it. Then Oklahoma put together another nine-play drive that ended with a lost fumble. Herbstreit was the Ohio State starting quarterback and co-captain his senior year in 1992.

"Baker deserves a ton of credit", Riley said. We played it for 60 minutes. Riley hugged his predecessor, Bob Stoops, as he left the field after the victory.

"As far as previous year, there are certain things that do stick with us", he said. "We felt like we were close and obviously we were playing so well on defense". This didn't look like a team that will contend, but the same thing was said after the loss to Virginia Tech in 2014.
