Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Jeff Merkley of OR are the latest Democratic 2020 presidential prospects to announce their support for Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) so-called "Medicare for All" bill, he followed in the footsteps of other potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates.

Gillibrand, New York's junior senator, plans on being a co-sponsor of the bill, Mic.com reported Monday. Democrats should invest time and resources in figuring out the best way to counter those arguments, especially since we know all too well how much people fear change when it comes to their health care.

In August, Peter Suderman wrote that "the future of health policy politics is Republicans defending something like Obamacare and Democrats pushing for something like single-payer". Booker, Gillibrand, Harris, and Warren are all rumored to be plotting presidential runs in 2020.

The rest of the party is getting on board with single-payer - or "Medicare for all", where the federal government would provide health insurance for every American financed through taxes - as well.

Moreover, the late Tommy Douglas, who introduced Canadian single-payer in the 1960's, was accordingly voted all-time greatest Canadian in a 2004 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation survey.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has long supported universal health care coverage.

. In the Trump era, he saw that there was an opportunity for someone to establish themselves as a progressive leader without necessarily being a firebrand like a Bernie Sanders or an Elizabeth Warren. Although he has showered former President Barack Obama with high praise for passing the Affordable Care Act in 2010, Booker said Monday that Obama did not travel far enough down the single payer system road.

But if a Democrat wins the White House in 2020, it now seems very likely he or she will have promised to pursue single-payer as president.

"Health care should be a right, it should never be a privilege".

"I don't think it's a litmus test", Pelosi said.

It would offer Americans the same kind of health care that is afforded Canadians, where the government entirely funds health care through tax dollars and various "levies" that are deducted when people pay their income taxes every year. In the House, meanwhile, well over 100 Democrats have co-sponsored Rep. John Conyers' "Expanded & Improved Medicare For All bill". Democratic activists believe the GOP's failed attempt to repeal Obamacare has strengthened the resolve of the nation's leftists.

As the Overton window moves on healthcare, Republican moderates will become more convinced of the need to make only moderate reforms to the existing law to blunt the push for single-payer.
