Many host cities, including Athens 2004 and Rio de Janeiro past year, struggled to get ready in time for the Olympics and had to race to complete the venues, leading to higher costs and allegations of corruption in awarding contracts quickly.

The 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics have officially been granted to Paris and Los Angeles, respectively, the International Olympic Committee announced with a unanimous vote on Wednesday at a session in Lima, Peru.

It is the first time the IOC has awarded a Games 11 years in advance, as it traditionally gives the next Olympic host city seven years to prepare.

The evaluation commission signed off on those Monday, saying that although details need to be finalized, it is confident LA can host in 2028.

Congratulations to Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

LA 2028 also looks to reap the benefits of an estimated $2.2 billion package to get its legacy plans started.

President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday hailed the decision to award the 2024 Olympics to Paris as a "victory for France". Only four have remained to the vote.

"With this team, I am very proud and moved to bring the Games back to Paris".

The IOC also said the double choices of L.A. and Paris are considered historic, and the last time two hosts were decided at once was in 1921, when Paris was chosen to host the 1924 games and Amsterdam was chosen for the 1928 games.

Paris and Los Angeles were the only competitors left for 2024 after rival cities pulled their bids because of worries over cost.

It was two years ago that L.A.'s effort appeared to be over after the city lost to Boston in a competition to become the sole American bidder.

"This new MOU ensures that our city priorities remain front-and-center in LA 2028's preparations for the Games".

Both cities believe that due to infrastructure and venues that are already in place, they can avoid the rising costs of hosting the Olympics. "And I think we have a chance to do that again".

"My top priorities in this process are to protect Los Angeles taxpayers and create new opportunities for young Angelenos to play sports, and be healthy, " Garcetti said in August before the City Council voted on a new memorandum of understanding for '28.

Bach first signalled publicly that the double-award of an Olympics could be on the agenda in December previous year, lamenting that the bidding process produced “too many losers”.
