Suicide bomb and gun attacks on Iraqi restaurant and police checkpoint kill at least 50 people
The remaining attackers then got into a vehicle and drove to a nearby security checkpoint, where they blew themselves up.
Police sources confirmed that some police officers too had died in the checkpoint attack.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) claimed responsibility for the suicide attacks, according to the group's Amaq news agency.
Al-Nassiri says the dead included Iranian pilgrims and a policeman.
The province's Governor, Yahya al-Nassiri, said that initially, the militants opened fire at the checkpoint and the restaurant located on the highway that links Baghdad with other provinces.
Amongst the three attacks, initial reports indicated that the deadliest attack was at a restaurant west of Nassiriya.
IS-backed attacks in southern Iraq, where the bulk of the country's oil is produced, are relatively rare thanks to a tighter grip maintained by the Iraqi security forces.
Later in the day, al-Khalidi said, "Sixty people were killed, including Iranian citizens". One attacker detonated his explosive vest inside the restaurant. It occurs in aftermath of a visit of iraqi prime minister, Haider Al-Abadi, in province of Dhi Qar, in particular, to Nasiriyya. The Shi'ite dominated Dhiqar province is 320 kilometers southeast of Baghdad.
