Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi to miss UN General Assembly debate

Global split over Rohingya crisis as China backs Myanmar crackdown

State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, the country's de facto leader and onetime human rights icon, has come under fire for failing to be an advocate for the Rohingya.

Dhaka had earlier sought New Delhi's help in addressing the problems faced by the Bangladesh government as hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have entered that country after fleeing persecution in Myanmar's restive Rakhine state. He wants the government of Myanmar to implement, with concrete action, recommendations made by an independent advisory commission led by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, including speeding up the citizen verification process to ensure that human rights are recognized for all groups. Make no mistake: "this is ethnic cleansing", Hassan said.

The Security Council also urged the government to implement the recommendations of a commission led by former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan calling for economic development and social justice to counter deadly violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Rakhine state.

"And the Government of Myanmar has an important obligation in looking to the longer term in implementing the recommendations of the Annan Commission", he said.

Secretary-General Guterres said he has spoken to Suu Kyi several times about the "dramatic tragedy", but not since the announcement that she is skipping the General Assembly.

The Sikh volunteers from Khalsa Aid (India) arrived in Bangladesh last week to provide free langar(community kitchen service which provides food) to the Rohingya refugees who have fled Myanmar after violence spread.

They said it's a very delicate course to navigate at this point.

The Rohingya, a majority of whom are Muslim, are an ethnic group in Myanmar where most people are Buddhist. He noted that the global community has called upon Suu Kyi to stop the violence and hold human rights abusers accountable, "but there has been no action to-date". They have set up a daily langar service for 30,000 to 50,000 people, and aim to build stable and secure shelters for the refugees after the Bangladesh government allots land for the same.

"All 7,000 Rohingya have nothing to do with terrorism", the community, represented by counsel Colin Gonsalves, said.

"We were united in our concern about the situation, in the deterioration of the situation and we have heard graphically from the Secretary-General and Jeff Feltman who briefed us on the catastrophe that is befalling Rakhine State and Rohingya there", he said.

If media reports are to be believed, boats carrying Rohingya capsized in Bangladesh, killing at least 1000 people.

The nationalists have taken up common cause with local Rakhine Buddhists in rallying against the Rohingya and agree with the Rakhine's claims that the Rohingya are recent Bengali immigrants who deserve no ethnic rights.
