Regional tension has risen markedly since the North conducted its sixth, and by far its most powerful, nuclear test on Sept 3.

The statement from a group called the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee attacked the United States for leading a push for stronger U.N. sanctions against North Korea, as well as Japan for joining the US campaign.

Following Monday's UN Security Council vote in support of the US-drafted sanctions resolution aimed at forcing the North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un to abandon the nuclear weapon and missile programmes, Pyongyang vowed to redouble its efforts to acquire weapons of mass destruction and warned that the U.S. would face "the greatest pain it ever experienced in history" for leading a push for harsher UN sanctions.

While the duration and scope of such a conflict would be hard to measure, North Korea remained an huge risk, Fordham said.

The U.N. resolution also bans countries from giving additional work permits to North Korean laborers, another source of money for Pyongyang.

"Japan is no longer needed to exist near us", the state-run Korean Central News Agency said on Thursday, citing a statement by the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee. The analysts gave no indication that a test appeared to be imminent. That would be much higher than most official estimates, which have varied.

North Korea carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3, worsening already fraught U.S.

There are in total four tunnel openings into four mountains at their Punggye-ri test site.

This week, analysts at 38 North, a monitoring service, said satellite images of North Korea's nuclear testing site showed the effects of the natural disaster caused by the most recent test, as well as preparations for "future underground nuclear testing".

St-Amand says Canada would have no role in deciding what to do if a ballistic missile from North Korea or any other country was detected heading toward North America.

A more powerful natural disaster the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization estimated to be of a 5.8 magnitude, but later revised to 6.1, is evidence the bomb could have unleashed as much as 250 kilotons of energy, significantly more than the previously estimated 100-120 kilotons. "Essentially, I would like to see Japan pursue its own diplomacy and mediate so they will lower their fists", he said.

Before he took over in January as President Donald Trump's Pentagon chief, Mattis had suggested that the silo-based, long-range weapons, known as intercontinental ballistic missiles, might be expendable.
