16-year-old dead, 15-year-old critical in double stabbing at Bronx school in NYC

A 15-year-old student was fatally stabbed at a Bronx school police said

At a news conference with police and school officials, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said everyone in the community has been affected by the violence. The other teen was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The fight, which had been brewing since the beginning of the school year about two weeks ago, occurred in a fifth-floor classroom, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

The alleged killer is Abel Cedeno, an 18-year-old from the Bronx, according to the New York Post.

The Bronx student accused of fatally stabbing his classmate and critically wounding another on Wednesday told investigators the incident at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation was the first time he had a run-in with his victims, an NYPD official said.

In the wake of the stabbing, the first slaying inside a city school in almost 25 years, authorities have installed two body scanners and two X-ray machines at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation. He said that the information that the Police Department now has is preliminary, saying that facts are "still emerging in this case". He has preliminarily been charged with one count of murder, two counts of of attempted murder, one count of manslaughter, one count of attempted manslaughter, two counts of assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Boyce said that the 18-year-old student "has made statements to us explaining what happened". He went to the assistant principal's office and quietly sat waiting for the authorities to arrive, Boyce said.

'There were arguments going on for two weeks into the school year.

The school, attended by about 1,100 students, is not one of the roughly 75 schools in New York's million-student system that requires children to pass through metal detectors.

The two students were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where McCree, 15, died from a stab wound to the chest; Laboy, 16, remains in critical condition. "I guess he did that kind of to scare them off, not to actually hurt anyone", she said. The school serves students between sixth through 112th grades and shares space with PS 67 on Mohegan Avenue in the East Tremont section of the Bronx.

"I tried to called the school". On Thursday, metal detectors and additional school security officers will be made available for random screenings at the school.

The father rushed to the school, where he saw his daughter, a kindergartener, through a window waving to him.
