The vigil in Nashville, which took place at the Ascend Amphitheater, was held in remembrance of those who were killed in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sunday night (Oct. 1), when a shooter opened fire on the crowd of more than 20,000 people gathered for the Route 91 Harvest Festival. "And so I did know those people in that way".

He then performed a powerful cover of Simon and Garfunkel's classic tune "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Police advised people to avoid the area and they shut down the south end of the strip as well as freeway traffic on the I-15 from Tropicana to Russell Road.

On Monday night, Nashville hosted a candlelight vigil paying tribute to those affected by the tragedy.

Nashville star and country artist Charles Esten took the stage first to greet the audience, obviously shaken by the day's events. "They're like family. It's the one thing about country music that's always been at the center of it, and that it is [a] community, it's about community".

Joey, a 35-year-old aspiring Nashville musician had a similar reaction when he woke up to the same news as Urban. "I hate that my nightmare came true for other people", he said, adding that, had he been in Vegas, he "absolutely" would've attended Route 91 Harvest, but said he wasn't going to let that keep him away from public gatherings. Those aren't the candles that matter, those aren't the lights that matter.

"The counterweight to grief is community and that is what Nashville does so well", Mayor Megan Barry said, echoing the sentiments of Urban and everyone else in attendance.

Both were held - along with many others across the United States - after suspected gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd at an open air concert in the city.

Join us this evening for some time to reflect, pray, meditate or whatever fits your personal beliefs, for the victims, their family and friends, and the entire community of Las Vegas. "You shouldn't have to worry about dying", Barry said.
