The Republican 20-Week Abortion Limit

White House “Strongly Supports” Bill Banning Abortion After 20 Weeks
The law states that no unborn baby past 20 weeks gestation can be aborted, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. "This is an issue that Trump voters support".
The Trump administration, through the Office of Management and Budget, has expressed its support of the bill, writing in a statement that it "applauds the House of Representatives for continuing its efforts to secure critical pro-life protections". "Science leaves us no room to justify their slaughter, and our founding fathers leave us no path to disregard their right to life", said Collins.
The House voted 237-189 in favor of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which targets late-term abortions at the point where pro-life advocates argue that babies can feel pain in utero.
"We hold that every child, from conception onward, deserves love and the protection of the law.
Polls consistently show that large, diverse majorities of Americans support this legislation - women in higher numbers than men".
Even so, National Right to Life Committee legislative director Jennifer Popik said her group wants the Senate to vote on the measure because "it highlights for people across the country how extreme people on the other side are on this issue".
But given that the US Supreme Court has refused to defend state "heartbeat laws" (6-week bans) that have been ruled unconstitutional, other pro-lifers supported his strategy.
In 2015, when the Senate voted unsuccessfully to end a filibuster of a very similar bill, three Democrats (Bob Casey, Joe Donnelly, and Joe Manchin) voted "yea" and two Republicans (Susan Collins and Mark Kirk) voted "nay". The lone no vote from the state's delegation to the House of Representatives was Cedric Richmond, a Democrat from New Orleans.
Some things are implanted in your mind forever, and no matter how much time passes, the events are as vivid today as when they took place. The bill would not bring the United States into line with Sweden (18 weeks) or Germany (12 weeks and mandatory Schwangerschaftskonfliktberatung, or abortion counseling) but it would represent a welcome step in the right direction.
The statement mentioned recent research showing a fetus feels pain 20 weeks into development. "We've had these conversations, we've had these elections and we actually know where we stand".
The Senate still must schedule consideration of the bill, but that seemed unlikely.
Abortion after 20 weeks, or the second trimester of pregnancy, would be a crime under the new legislation, except in some limited circumstances. "We do not believe that a 20-week fetus can perceive pain. We urge the Senate to follow the House's lead and send this bill to President Trump so he can sign this life affirming legislation into law", concluded Perkins.
However, South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham said he plans to introduce a companion measure soon anyway.
My son-a boy whom I named Joshua-was not 20 weeks like the unborn children this act seeks to protect, but I am certain that he suffered greatly as he burned to death from the saline solution. "The agenda behind this bill is clear: To shame women and to ban safe, legal abortion", said Dana Singiser, vice-president for Government Relations and Public Policy for Planned Parenthood. The vast majority of abortion procedures are performed before 20 weeks.
