Las Vegas massacre prompts more security at Chicago Marathon

06 October 2017, 12:26 | Erma Lawrence

Las Vegas mass murderer slaughtered more innocents than Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, who killed 49 people when he opened fire inside the LGBT nightclub.

The move announced Thursday comes the same day authorities confirmed that Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock had booked a hotel room in Chicago during the Lollapalooza music festival in August. He later booked a second room for August 3 through August 6, the same days as Lollapalooza in Grant Park.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo said he could not confirm whether Paddock had eyed the Life is lovely concert prior to his attack on concertgoers.

Lombardo said Paddock booked a room at the 21-story Ogden condo building via Airbnb, during the three-day Life Is Beautiful festival in downtown Las Vegas.

The Life is attractive festival was discussed briefly during a press conference on Tuesday by Sheriff Lombardo.

The Las Vegas massacre is the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history, overtaking the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando on June 12 a year ago.

His comments came shortly after Paddock's girlfriend said that she had no idea he was planning an attack on the Strip and was devastated for the victims. Her lawyer, Matt Lombard, said his client was co-operating fully with authorities.

Police recovered almost 50 firearms from three locations they searched, almost half of them from the hotel suite.

A lawyer for Marilou Danley read a statement from her after she was questioned by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents in Los Angeles about her boyfriend.

Ms Danley, who returned to the USA late Tuesday from a family visit to the Philippines, is regarded by investigators as a "person of interest".

"When we did see he was gambling, we did not see another individual appearing there". But she later feared it was a way to break up with her. "They train all year", Emanuel said.
