In the first of three planned spacewalks, NASA astronauts Randy Bresnik and Mark Vande Hei will go outside the International Space Station to fix the ISS main robotic appendage.

NASA has scheduled three spacewalks at the International Space Station this month to perform station maintenance.

"The second and third spacewalks will be devoted to lubricating the newly installed end effector and replacing cameras on the left side of the station's truss and the right side of the station's US Destiny laboratory", Nasa said.

Canadarm2 has two identical LEEs that are used to grab visiting spacecraft, as well as provide data and telemetry to the rest of the Canadian-built Mobile Base System.

Canadarm2, the Canadian robotic arm is one of the essential tools on the ISS.

For identification, Bresnik, call sign EV-1, is using helmet camera 18 and wearing a suit with red stripes.

This will be the first in the series of three spacewalks scheduled for the month of October, with Bresnik taking the lead in all three.

The robotic arm has been a key piece of equipment at the orbiting outpost for more than 16 years, but began malfunctioning in August.

"Since these components are well beyond their design life, this really is expected wear and tear on the arm", Braithwaite said.

This will be Randy Bresnik's third spacewalk and will mark Van Hei's debut. It hasn't caused any slowdown in standard ISS operations, and the crew keeps a spare LEE around in case of just such an emergency.

When the spacewalk begins, Nespoli will head to the robotic workstation, where he will be able to remotely operate Canadarm2 and help the two spacewalkers reach the LEE at the end of the arm.

The next two spacewalks, on October 10 and October 18, will focus on lubricating the joints in the new LEE using a device called a ballscrew lubrication tool, or BLT.
