Ghana gas station explosions rock capital Accra
In Accra, the capital of the African nation of Ghana, on Saturday night blew up the station of liquefaction of natural gas.
Ghana's deputy information minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said it was "too early to give any figures" on the number injured and dead. "There are quite a number also injured".
Several eyewitnesses said they had counted four or five bodies, although some bodies could have already been removed from the scene.
"Cabinet will be meeting on Thursday, October 12, 2017 and, I believe, out of that meeting, the country will know what our programme is, the comprehensive programme we intend to have to bring such incidents to a stop", he said.
Police said the blasts happened in the Atomic Junction roundabout area of Legon in northeast Accra at about 1930 GMT. "It was like refugees moving away from a war-torn zone".
Videos of the explosion posted on social media showed a blazing mushroom cloud.
People have been warned by the city authorities to avoid the scene of the explosion as fire fighters and ambulances rushed to the scene to put out the fire.
A June 2015 explosion killed more than 150 people as many were seeking shelter from a storm at the gas station when that tragedy occurred.
Two fuel stations, including a gas refill station at the Madina Junction, caught fire leading to the destruction of several properties and loss of lives.
Infrastructure in Accra, a city of roughly seven million people, has failed to keep pace with population growth after years of rapid economic expansion.
