GETTY Marouane Fellaini enjoys playing for Jose Mourinho at Man Utd

Marouane Fellaini

Marouane Fellaini has been ruled out of Manchester United's trip to Liverpool on Saturday due to strained medial knee ligaments.

Belgium's official national team account has published a tweet which says Fellaini will be out for a "couple of weeks", and won't be in contention for the global against Cyprus.

But Fellaini was forced off in just the 29th substitute with a knee injury with fears growing it could spark a long-term lay-off for the in-form midfielder. "Get well soon Marouane!"

This initial reaction to Fellaini's condition was downbeat, with Belgium manager Roberto Martinez making these comments after the game.

"We fear that there's ligament damage."

Marouane Fellaini has been ruled out for at least two weeks after suffering a knee ligament sprain while on worldwide duty.

The news will come as a relief for United manager Jose Mourinho, who is already without midfielder Paul Pogba.

The 29-year-old had been suffering from an Achilles problem earlier this week but was named in the starting XI on Saturday afternoon, despite Belgium having already sealed progress to the World Cup.

With Pogba not expected back until November Ander Herrera, who has played a bit-part role so far this season, could be recalled for the crunch game at Anfield.

A potential added injury to the growing list could not come at a worse time for United, who return after the global break for a crunch fixture with bitter rivals Liverpool. Four goals from 8 games in all competitions have equaled the number of goals scored by Fellaini last season from 47 parties.
