WMU beats Buffalo in record-tying 7 overtimes, setting new FBS scoring record
Donnie Ernsberger scores OT TD, and his sister (so says her jersey) runs on the field before the game is over.
LeVante Bellamy scored on a 66-yard run on the third play of the game, but that was long forgotten after Western Michigan counted for 376 yards, including 120 yards in overtime.
Western Michigan and Buffalo are now in a very tight #MACtion matchup in Western New York.
The two teams traded the lead back and forth all game long. The Bulls responded, and then scored again in the fifth overtime.
The game in Buffalo was tied at 31 going into the first overtime and 38 going into double overtime. It was Ernsberger's second touchdown catch of the year.
Western Michigan outshot the Bulldogs 39-34 and had a 30-17 advantage after the first two periods. That drew a flag, but Western Michigan made the PAT to send the game to a second OT.
In the seventh overtime, Buffalo settled for a 25-yard field goal, opening the door for Western Michigan to end the game short of a record-setting eighth overtime. In the end, the defending MAC champion Broncos survived after missing two previous chances to win earlier in the game to move to 4-2 on the year while Buffalo fell to 3-3 at the midway point of the season. Alas, Franklin scored on a 12-yard touchdown to keep the game at a record-tying seven overtimes.
"I don't think we played well", Lester said, "but we just kept battling and found a way to win".
