'Racist' ad? Soap company pulls images that caused social-media outcry

Dove Apologises For 'Racist' Facebook Advert Following Backlash

"We apologise deeply and sincerely for the offence that it has caused".

The soap company Dove sparked online outrage after a Facebook campaign posted on Friday showed a Black woman removing her brown shirt turned into a white woman wearing a cream shirt.

The adverts comprised of three images, showing a black woman removing her T-shirt to reveal a white woman with red hair underneath.

Blake also took screenshots of the ad that soon went viral on Facebook and Twitter. The visual was meant to convey that Dove Body Wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we got it wrong and, as a result, offended many people.

Dove's latest ad was an attempt to represent "women of color thoughtfully".

"Twitter user La'Quell, using the handle @Caramelxotic posted: "@Dove care to explain this racist Ad to me". "Your creative director should be fired", one Facebook user posted. "I've used their products forever, but it's time to move on". Imagine how many people would have seen and signed off on this thing.

Although a spokesperson from Dove they are re-evaluating internal process for creating and reviewing content, people on social media didn't buy their explanation asking how anyone could miss just how offensive the advertisement is.

While back in 2011, the brand was criticised for using a before and after image that appeared to place three women in a colour gradient of dark to light with the lightest woman suggested as the positive end result.

This isn't the first time Dove received backlash after releasing ads deemed racially insensitive.

Unilever, Dove's parent company, have not responded to comment requests from Washington Post. A bottle of Dove body wash sat before the women on the bathroom counter. We do not condone any activity or imagery that insults any audience.

"We're putting out these ads with these subliminal messages that are telling young ladies that your darker skin is not lovely enough, you need to purify and clean yourself", she said in a now-viral video.
