Brush fire erupts near Santa Ana Canyon Road in Anaheim
The fire, dubbed the Canyon Fire 2 because less than a month ago a fire named Canyon Fire burned parts of the same area, is the largest wildfire in Orange County in almost a decade, and pushed into Riverside County overnight.
With the fire spreading, the winds have helped to shroud much of Orange County and bordering parts of Los Angeles County in smoke.
By nighttime, the fire had burned 6,000 acres and 24 structures.
The fire's smoke could be seen as far west as downtown Long Beach.
A wildfire that has burned almost a dozen square miles among Southern California suburbs is still just 5 percent contained and authorities say the thousands of people who evacuated will not be going home soon.
Most commercial and residential homeowner insurance policies provide coverage for fire-related damages, including smoke, ash, soot, and other toxic wastes. Children from Running Springs, Anaheim Hills and Canyon Rim elementary schools were also being bused over to Canyon High School.
Officials in the neighboring city of Orange issued evacuation orders for all residents north of Santiago Canyon road to the city border with Anaheim.
An overnight shelter was also opened at Katella High School, 2200 E. Wagner Ave., Anaheim. Residents should take note of the emergency hotlines.
