Amazon Overhauls Kindle Oasis, Makes It Waterproof And Less Expensive
12 October 2017, 12:30 | Rudolph Thomas
Amazon Has An All-New, Waterproof Kindle
However, the main reason why anyone would be interested in the new Oasis is the fact that it's the first waterproofKindle. Amazon, I'm told, has also tested it in bath tub and pool water, along with sea water, just to make sure it's holiday-ready. You'll be able to adjust the font size, add different levels of bold to text and even change alignments.
Waterproofing might have been long-waited by a lot of Kindle users, but Amazon has also added support for audiobooks.
Amazon has been selling Kindles for 10 years now, but "waterproof" never appeared on its list of incremental technological advancements - until now.
Priced at $249.99, the new Kindle Oasis is now available for preorder. That covers the model with eight gigabytes of storage - customers can upgrade to 32 gigabytes for $30 more. Some of those models can be made waterproof with third-party covers or other add-ons, but the new version of the Oasis has that feature from the get-go.
The KindleOasis has a larger bezel on one side with page turn buttons, allowing for easy use when holding with one hand. There's also the Kobo Aura One, which offers similar features and a bigger screen for slightly less than the New KindleOasis. Unfortunately, that also means Amazon isn't including a leather case anymore. The only problem is that the New KindleOasis doesn't have a headphone hack or even USB-C (which supports audio output).
Amazon still has a huge range of Kindles, so it sees the Oasis as not only a flagship but also as an ultra-premium device for the most devoted of readers.
Amazon's other Kindle e-readers include the basic 6-inch Kindle ($79.99), Paperwhite ($119.99) and Voyage ($199.99). It's IPX8 rating certified which essentially means it can withstand submerging "in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes", and can survive being splashed at. It has the same 300 ppi e-paper display but the brightness has been improved courtesy of new LED lights.
The 2017 KindleOasis will be available in two storage options: 8GB costing [$250] and 32GB costing £260. It also connects over both Wi-Fi and 4G LTE.
Saarnio said: "I'll end at an ebook page at home, take my KindleOasis into the vehicle, pair it via Bluetooth and then hit play and it picks up the audiobook right where I left off in the ebook".
