White House chief of staff: 'I'm not quitting today'

It's Not Me, It's You: John Kelly Lectures The Press To 'Get Better Sources'

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly forcefully pushed back on rumors of discord between he and President Donald Trump on Thursday, telling reporters that he has no plans to resign, nor does he have reason to believe he will be fired.

"Although I read it all the time, pretty consistently, I'm not quitting today", Kelly said.

"I don't think I'm being fired today and I am not so frustrated in this job that I'm thinking of leaving", Kelly said in a light-hearted moment with reporters. 'I would tell you, this is the hardest job I've ever had.

He later added, "Unless things change, I'm not quitting I'm not getting fired and I don't think I'll fire anyone tomorrow".

And while the president has not said anything critical of Kelly, and in fact, has had nothing but praise for the retired Marine Corps general, reports have circulated that tensions between the two have been brewing. And at Trump's speech last month before the U.N., Kelly had his head in his hands.

"No, I'm not frustrated", he said.

Kelly took over as President Trump's Chief of Staff on July 28, bringing a new sense of order to the West Wing. Photos circulated on social media during the president's controversial comments about the August violence Charlottesville, Va., - saying that there were "very fine people" on "both sides" of the clash between white nationalists and counterprotesters - of Kelly looking at the ground.

"All of you", Kelly said. "Not all of you, but many of you". It is astounding to me how much is misreported.

'I would offer, though, it is not the best job I've ever had.

Kelly also noted that "Congress has been frustrating" to the President. "But I listen to everybody and ultimately I will do what's right for the United States and really what's right for the world", he said, adding, "it's a problem that has to be solved". When Kelly served as Homeland Security secretary until recently, Nielsen was his top aide. The chief of staff did so with a smile and a salute.
