Employees injured in attempted prison break in Pasquotank Co

Several employees at the Pasquotank Correctional Institute have been injured during an attempted prisoner escape Thursday, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

An attempted prison-break by inmates at a state prison in #North Carolina left several employees injured on Thursday afternoon, but was thwarted by prison authorities, officials said.

Corrections officer Justin Smith, 35, and 50-year-old Veronica Darden, a supervisor with Corrections Enterprises were killed, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

None of the inmates managed to escape, the department of public safety said in a statement.

NCDPS said the prison houses 725 male inmates in close, medium, and minimum custody.

The Pasquotank Sheriff's Office said they got a call announcing a conceivable escape of detainees.

The prison, which had 729 inmates on Thursday, was locked down, as were nearby schools. The state's Prison Emergency Response Team, a tactical unit, rushed to the facility along with police.

Walker said no inmates escaped during the incident.

"The DPS family is devastated by the tragic events that took place at Pasquotank Correctional Institution", Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks said. Several of the injured are employees. Peter J. Sengenberger, a spokesman for Sentara, said information on their conditions would not be released until Friday.

Lockdowns at Northside Elementary School, Elizabeth City Middle School, and Pasquotank County High School were lifted shortly after 5 p.m.

All afternoon activities at the schools have been cancelled.

"Students on buses who had not arrived home already, were brought back to the schools due to the potential of inmates being in the area and students in transport".
