Today, Joe Belfiore confirmed that the Microsoft Launcher has exited beta and it is gradually rolling out to the existing users, it might take a couple of days or weeks for the launcher to get updated on all Android devices.
The Dutch DPA investigated Windows 10 Home and Pro and found that Microsoft still doesn't properly inform users about the type of data it collects, nor for what goal.
If you use Microsoft Edge on your Desktop/Laptop as your default browser this is great as you will be able to sync your bookmarks, history, reading list etc across devices.
Although collection of data is a generally unpopular practice from a consumer standpoint, Microsoft does have valid uses and benefits from collecting extensive metadata. Another handy feature that the Edge browser offers is a built-in QR Code Reader.
"Due to Microsoft's approach users lack control of their data", claims the DPA. Thus, the brunt of the work in protecting against such attacks would fall on the browser's ability to block, for example, phishing URLs when a user is trying to open them.
Microsoft processes data from both levels of telemetry in order to fix errors, to keep devices up-to-date and secure and to improve its own products and services.
It seems if the protection of your users is one of their your priorities, it makes a lot more sense to use Edge than Chrome.
Microsoft Edge's unique feature that sets it apart from other browsers is the "Continue on PC" function.
These data are called "telemetry data".
Microsoft Edge will also be used as the company's Kindle reader of sorts, with the app already having a dedicated section for Books which is presently empty and will contain your books purchased from the Microsoft Store in the future.
The watchdog found that during the installation of Windows 10, users are encouraged to accept default settings that enable "full telemetry" rather than the more limited "basic" option. The preview will take about 56MB of your phone space; but could take much more than that when the full version is finally out probably soon. Additionally, the Dutch DPA has established that Microsoft has not respected existing privacy choices from some users when they upgraded to the Creators Update. The Edge is now moving out from the home and making its place in Android and iOS.
