Police in Texas say they have found a body while investigating a case of a three-year-old who went missing earlier this month after her father sent her out of their home at 3am as punishment.

Law enforcement officials recovered the body from the narrow 75-foot long culvert, underneath a road near a railway track in Richardson on Sunday, reports The American Bazaar daily.

Sherin's father, Wesley Mathews, told police he left the little girl under a tree near their at around 3 a.m. because she refused to drink her milk. He had gone out to check for Sherin 15 minutes later and found her gone, he said.

Child protective services removed Wesley Matthew's 4-year-old biological daughter and placed her in state custody after Sherin disappeared and he was arrested.

Wesley Mathews, the foster father of the missing girl, was arrested on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child.

He has since been released on a $250,000 bond.

The body was found in a tunnel about half a mile from her home on Sunday.

The Richardson police department told reporters the body was "most likely" of Sherin Mathews, whose disappearance made headlines in Dallas and India.

Richardson police held a news conference Sunday afternoon.

Police weren't alerted about Sherin being missing until five hours later.

Dallas News reported that Sherin was malnourished and did not have the language skills of a typical 3-year-old.

"I think the community needs to heal, but more than anything, she needs to be at peace", Vemula says.

Investigators combed Sherin's neighborhood and surrounding area with K-9 teams and helicopters and executed a search warrant at the Mathews' home on October 10, CNN reported.

An Amber Alert was issued for Sherin after she went missing, but it was discontinued the following Monday.

A CPS hearing set for Monday morning for the Mathews' biological 4-year-old daughter, who was taken away from the home and placed in state custody after Sherin's disappearance, was postponed until November 13.
