Reports had leaked out last month about Justin Timberlake performing at this year's Super Bowl halftime show, and on Sunday, the National Football League provided confirmation. That year, the crossover artist's perofrmance with Janet Jackson on the song "Rock Your Body" was a cultural and political watershed moment after he pulled off her nipple guard and briefly exposed her right breast. The incident, later described as a "wardrobe malfunction", led to numerous complaints and a large fine by the Federal Communications Commission, The New York Times reported. Jackson suffered criticism about it for years.
Halftime was handed back to pop acts seven years ago, as the featured entertainers since then have included Black-Eyed Peas, Madonna, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga (with Coldplay a possible exception, depending on whether one defines them as "rock").
It is not yet known whether Timberlake will be performing on the halftime stage solo or he will be accompanied by another guest/guests, which has become somewhat of a trend at Super Bowls recently. Jackson and Timberlake both apologized; in his statement, issued shortly after the show ended, Timberlake blamed the incident, which also has been referred to as Nipplegate, on a "wardrobe malfunction" - introducing that phrase into the popular lexicon.
"Excuse me sir, do you have the time", Timberlake asks The Tonight Show host in an English accent. If you consider it 50/50, I probably got 10 per cent of the blame.
