AMD Ryzen Mobile Processors With AMD Vega Graphics Launched, Feature Precision Boost 2 And Mobile XFR
Close on the heels of reporting its third-quarter results, which were given a thumbs-down by investors, the company announced Thursday the introduction of its Ryzen mobile processor, previously codenamed the "Raven Ridge" mobile APU.
For AMD, however, the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 use the latest versions of both its CPU and GPU architectures, including a couple of new tricks that haven't yet made their way into the desktop versions.
AMD says that the new Ryzen laptop processors promise over 200 percent more CPU performance compared to its previous generation of laptop processors and up to 128 percent improved graphics performance.
Implementing only a single CCX is an important step forward for reducing power consumption enough to lower temperatures and fit Ryzen into slim devices. AMD is also introducing what it calls mXFR, or Mobile Extended Frequency Range, which allows notebooks with speficially optimised cooling solutions to run at even higher speeds for longer durations. The Ryzen 7 model has a maximum clock speed of 3.8GHz, and 10 GPU compute units running at 1300MHz. AMD claims an astonishing 161 percent graphics performance lead over its competition and 44 percent more CPU performance in multi-threaded tasks. Both APUs feature 2 MB of L2 and 4 MB of L3 cache. Dual-channel DDR4-2400 RAM is supported.
Gaming performance on these low power APUs is expected to be reasonably good considering that these are not meant to be used for extreme performance needs. Lowering the resolution will be required for more intensive games, but considering the size and weight of HP's X360 thin and laptop as well as battery life, this is a reasonable compromise.
The processor, according to the company, offers leading performance and a complete entertainment experience, with optimal efficiency. Compared to just three years ago, Raven Ridge is almost six times more efficient than Kaveri which launched in 2014.
But things are looking like they're going to be different in the mobile space.
Windows devices powered by Ryzen mobile processors will be available from PC OEMs including Acer, HP and Lenovo later this year. Dell, Asus, and other OEMs are expected to release their own laptops with Ryzen Mobile in early 2018.
