Public health urges residents to get flu shot
About 3,500 people in Canada die every year due to complications from the flu, according to the health authority.
"Each year the seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season", said Alice Hughes, infection prevention manager at St. Anthony Hospital.
"Some people delay getting a flu shot in the mistaken belief that vaccine effectiveness will wear off before winter, when flu season typically intensifies", said Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County Health Officer.
"Children in this age group have some of the highest rates of influenza and associated complications, and this year has been no different", Mr Dick said. "It is highly contagious, and is among the top 10 leading causes of death in Canada". Influenza is easily spread from person to person, and an infected person can spread the virus before they are even sick with symptoms. "And you want to get that protection for yourself and others before the flu is in our community". Trivalent vaccines are made to protect against three flu viruses - two influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) viruses, and an influenza B virus. Hundreds of people poured into two locations for free flu shots, some had learned their lesson.
"Unfortunately influenza can not be eradicated so we need to continue finding ways of protecting the community from this debilitating virus". It's especially important for people at higher risk of severe influenza and their close contacts to receive the flu vaccine.
Although flu shots have proven to be the best way to teach your immune system to fight back if exposed to the flu virus, many Hoosiers skip it. Those with Medicaid or other insurance who go to Public Health Offices are asked to bring their insurance card. Across North America, only about half of health-care workers usually get the annual flu vaccine, which has prompted many USA regions and employers to make the vaccine mandatory. His death came following an early season flu outbreak in a health care facility that has seen four additional confirmed flu cases.
