Stephon Gilmore returns to practice Dont'a Hightower Danny Amendola absent
He also was injured in the team's season-opening win over the Chiefs and missed the next two games before returning in New England's Week 4 loss to the Panthers.
NFL Network'sIan Rapoportreported that the influential linebacker will miss out on the Patriots attempts to retain the title they won so spectacularly in February, where he was a crucial factor.
The Patriots defense made significant strides during linebacker Dont'a Hightower's reemergence over the past month.
Hightower has dealt with injuries over the course of his career as he's only played in all 16 regular season games once, in 2013.
The New England Patriots defensive tackle was unable to participate in the team's walkthrough on Thursday, making his chances at playing on Sunday slim, per Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. Kyle Van Noy will continue to call the plays as their top inside linebacker, and Elandon Roberts, David Harris and Marquis Flowers will provide depth. Hightower's absence removes a good player, a leader and the New England's defensive signal caller all in one swoop. Albert Breer of The MMQB has offered some insight about Hightower's pectoral injury. Last season he played in 13 games, and in 2014 and 2015 he appeared in just 12. That might not be enough for Sunday's game, especially considering that Guy is managing a chest injury that has limited his participation in practice, and Branch's stamina to handle an increased workload is an unknown this year. A bunch of guys have to step up and kind of try to fill that role - and in this case, a bunch of different roles.
