The helicopter had been flying from Pyramid, a Russian settlement on Svalbard, to Barentsburg, the rescue services said.

Rescuers are trying to find a Russian Mi-8 civilian helicopter that crashed into the sea with eight people on board in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard.

The helicopter was reportedly a Mil Mi-8, but there has been no official confirmation yet.

The nationalities of the eight people on board are also unknown so far.

There were three pilots and five passengers aboard the helicopter, the Russian emergencies services told TASS. At 15:35 local time (16:35 Moscow time) the center received a message saying that the helicopter disappeared. "It's a regular flight", he said.

The aircraft was confirmed to have come down about 10 minutes later, rescue services said.

Svalbard is more than 500 miles north of Norway's mainland.

Nationals of all signatory states enjoy "equal liberty of access and entry" to Svalbard and its waters.

Under the provisions of the treaty, Russia operates a coal mine in Barentsburg, which is home to several hundred Russian and Ukrainian miners.

The helicopter went down in the sea some two-three kilometres (1.3 to 1.9 miles) off the coast of the Arctic port of Barentsburg. Yet another crash near Pyramiden of the same type of helicopter left two dead in 1991.
