Svitolina fought hard but fell just short

A rampant Caroline Wozniacki said a more assertive approach is fuelling her spectacular start to the WTA Finals after she thrashed world number one Simona Halep in straight sets on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old won back-to-back tournaments in China to become the eighth and final qualifier for Singapore and after being battered by Caroline Wozniacki in the opening set, Garcia stormed back to record a stunning 0-6 6-3 7-5 triumph.

Though she lost her first two matches of the year-end championships (to Wozniacki and Caroline Garcia), Svitolina still has a slim chance of advancing to the semifinals.

Yesterday's win was her second victory in the group stage.

She said: "Even if I did the same result here, I'm a different player and I'm stronger".

"I made some good shots and some good points, but I missed too many to win a match".

Svitolina, victor of no fewer than five titles this year, showed her mettle with a quick break in the third set, and after conceding a break back, fired up her backhand to make two cross-court winners past the net-bound Garcia.

Garcia, who won her last two tournaments to reach the Finals, was two points from elimination in the 10th game of the third set but she dug deep to hand Wozniacki her first defeat of the competition. I mean, I qualified last minute, two weeks before. ' Discussing her match, she added, 'One point, maybe, decided the match, but I missed my chances.

"Everything went so fast for me, so I'm very stressed to be here, but now I enjoy it and it's the best moment". I really wanted to keep improving, play every single match and get experience.

But she said finishing with the top ranking was not on her mind. As a little girl, I think everyone who plays tennis wants to be No1 and it was my dream, and I was very lucky that it happened.

"I didn't really do anything special - I just prepared for another match". It was tough to come back after - I was sad with the way I played this week. I didn't feel the ball, I don't know why. "I just have to calm down and keep the ball in play more and make my opponent run".
