"I see a difference in behavior from one player directed specifically at a player and a logo", Manfred said, via Scott Boeck of USA Today.

Darvish called the gesture "disrespectful", but later said he hoped it could be a teachable moment.

A Cuba native, Gurriel played 15 seasons in the Cuban National Series and Japan Central League from 2001-16.

"Yes, of course. I want to talk to him because I have nothing against him", he said.

ABC News reports the 33-year-old first baseman was caught in the dugout mouthing a derogatory term in Spanish and making a slanted-eye gesture as he sat on the bench - an insensitive and racially charged implication about Asians.

"I try not to care much about it, but he played in Japan and I have a lot of respect for him, so I try not to think about it too much against him", Darvish said.

"He handled this in as classy a way as a player possibly could something as negative as this", Manfred said of Darvish.

Evan Gattis is the Houston Astros' designated hitter and bats seventh in Game 3 on Friday night as the World Series shifts to the American League ballpark. I would also like to apologizs to the Dodgers organisation, the Astros, Major League Baseball and to all fans across the game, ' he said.

"No one is ideal", Darvish wrote.

Darvish was born in Japan, to an Iranian father and a Japanese mother.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said the team was "surprised and disappointed" by Gurriel's behavior and supported Manfred's decision. Matt Joyce of the Oakland Athletics and the Blue Jays' Kevin Pillar were both suspended for two games this season after using gay slurs in separate incidents, so there's already some precedent for the commissioner to take action.

Gurriel has accepted his punishment and will lose over £250,000 in salary during his ban, but this continues to show the amount of work that still needs to be done by major professional sports to educate players about what is acceptable behaviour.

And yet, the suspension beginning next season means Gurriel is back in the Astros' lineup tonight.
