Downtown Trick-Or-Treat on Halloween from 3-5pm

31 October 2017, 12:27 | Rufus Hill

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington offers tips to keep you and your family safe while trick-or-treating this Halloween.

Police across the area will be out in full force on All Hallows' Eve, and extra patrols will help keep an eye on the toil and trouble. They also say it is important to check the candy given before letting your children eat it. When your child is picking out a costume, make sure to pick the right size and use non-toxic face paints instead of masks.

Flashlights are also encouraged and for the young kiddos, they should never be alone.

They said always trick or treat in groups and don't go inside someone's home or vehicle.

Ensure costumes fit well so they don't obscure visibility and so children won't trip or fall.

To cut some of the sugar while still enjoying the holiday, Sawyer recommended ditching the auto and walking between houses, encouraging kids to take only one piece of candy per house, and even having a contest to see who can get the most steps in when trick-or-treating. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. Be sure to walk, not run, and make use of crosswalks.

Wear reflective clothing or bright costumes.

Fred Miller Park's annual BOOFest will be held Monday night from 4:30 8 p.m. with local businesses handing out treats for those who wish to trick-or-treat a day early.

Sheriff Whittington also reminds residents that sex offenders are not allowed to participate in Halloween activities.

- Approach only homes that have porch lights on.

Sheriff Whittington said, "Parents can go to our website at and conduct a search to see where sex offenders reside in their neighborhood or the area where the children will be trick-or-treating".

Since Halloween falls on a Tuesday night, many drivers will be heading home from work. "You can view maps that pinpoint registered sex offenders' addresses in your neighborhood".
