A Hamas tunnel was discovered under a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip.

Those known to be have killed were rescue teams that entered the tunnel to save their fellow terrorists, according to Hebrew-language media reports. "This is what Hamas rule looks like and this is more proof of the double war crime committed as terror tunnels are built to attack Israelis, while using the children of Gaza as human shields".

The tunnel was still under construction, according to Manelis, which supports the claim by Gaza's ruling Hamas terrorist organization that operatives were lost in the incident.

Most belonged to Islamic Jihad, one of several groups in Gaza that are classified as terrorist organizations by the US and European Union.

The prime minister said Israel holds Hamas responsible for all military action against Israel emanating from the Gaza Strip and "whoever hurts us, we hurt them".

Their deaths were announced after Israel "neutralised a terror tunnel leading into southern Israel", military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told journalists. Today we located a tunnel and destroyed it.

Conricus declined to give further information on the "new technology" but said it was used for the first time in detecting a tunnel.

Despite an assassination attempt on Hamas's internal security chief Tawfiq Abu Naim on Friday, the terror group says it will continue to abide by the Cairo agreement and hand over control of Gaza's border crossing to the PA on Wednesday.

Monday's operation came as Palestinian rival factions Hamas and Fatah seek to follow through on a reconciliation deal signed earlier this month aimed at ending a decade-long rift between them. Israel has warned that it will not accept a unity government that includes Hamas if the Islamist movement does not disarm and recognise the country, among other demands.

UNRWA reportedly informed Israel immediately regarding the discovery.
