Netflix suspends "House of Cards" production after allegations against Kevin Spacey

House Of Cards spin-offs could be in the works in the wake of its cancellation

Anthony Rapp

Netflix has announced it is cancelling its flagship television series, House of Cards, a day after allegations that its star, Kevin Spacey, sexually harassed a 14-year-old boy, The Telegraph reports. Spacey has since released a statement apologising for the incident, however, he also said he does not recall it taking place.

Yesterday the companies announced that the sixth season would be the last for the series, which was now in production in Baltimore. The decision to end the show was made two months before production began on the season and was not related to the allegation against Spacey, according to two sources.

The announcement came just hours after the actor, who plays President Frank Underwood in the award-winning political drama, was stripped of an upcoming Emmy award "in light of recent events".

"During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on 'House of Cards, ' I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behavior on set or off", he said.

It makes sense then that his Emmy-nominated series House of Cards is in production limbo.

"I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago", Spacey stated.

The company did, however, address the allegations in a joint statement with Media Rights Capital, which produces the series.

Online streaming service Netflix and show producers Media Rights Capital (MRC) said in a statement that the suspension would continue until "further notice". He also spoke publicly for the first time about being gay, which draw backlash from some observers as an attempt at deflection. The Academy said in June that it would present the award to Spacey at the 45th International Emmy Awards Gala to be held on November 20 in NY.

A tipline for complaints against Kevin Spacey has been set up by the famed London theater where he served as artistic director for more than a decade.

But that doesn't mean the House of Cards universe is done for good. "This is not a coming-out story about Kevin Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp and all those who bravely speak out against unwanted sexual advances". "I feel for Mr. Rapp and I support his courage".
