Tokyo police have found nine bodies including two with their heads severed in a flat in the city suburbsMore
Tokyo police say they have arrested a man after finding "multiple" dismembered bodies in coolers in his apartment in a city southwest of the capital. The woman is believed to have met the man after writing on a suicide site on the internet that she wanted to kill herself. In July 2016, a 27-year-old former employee at a care home for the disabled killed 19 people and injured more than 20 in a knife attack.
An examination of security camera footage taken at Odakyu Sobudai-Mae Station, which is located near the residence, on October 23 shows the woman with the man. But, lately the country has been ripe with tragic, high-profile murders.
Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
He told police his motives were money and sexual abuse, Japanese media reported Wednesday, but police refused to confirm the reports to AP.
Shiraishi told police that he dismembered the bodies in his bathroom, and disposed some of the body parts out with the rubbish, Kyodo News agency reported. The nine people are apparently eight women and one man.
Two investigators then followed Shiraishi back to his apartment and knocked on the door, public broadcaster NHK said.
The suspect, Takahiro Shiraishi, is reported to have confessed to killing and dismembering nine individuals.
"Some of them expressed suicidal thoughts on Twitter and he offered to help them die".
Photographers surround a police van transporting murder suspect Takahiro Shiraishi.
They are now working to identify the victims, fearing that she might be among them. The three went out for a drink.
Shiraishi also used similar tactics to kill seven other women. "I did it as a means of destroying evidence".
"Police suspect the victims include the missing 23-year-old and one couple, " the report said. The brother said she had been thinking of killing herself since the death of their mother in June, and that she had disappeared on October 23 from the group home in Hachioji, a suburb of Tokyo, where she was living. Authorities then discovered a link between her and Shiraishi.
