World Economic Forum Praises Slow but Sure Progress in Closing Saudi 'Gender Gap'

New Zealand ranks among top ten nations on gender equality - report

But it's not just European countries that scored highly; the top 10 also included Rwanda and Nicaragua. Overall, the world closed 68 per cent of the gap, almost unchanged from previous year.

The WEF collaborated with LinkedIn to delve more deeply into economic data in selected countries, with a focus on gender imbalance by industry.

More positively, Switzerland does record a modest positive increase on the wage equality for similar work indicator.

Even for developed countries, like the United Kingdom, which was ranked 15th on the Global Gender Gap list, 56.7 per cent of women's work is unpaid, as against 32 per cent men's. "The fact that 66 per cent of women's work is unpaid shows the gender disparity". One metric was life expectancy: Chinese women outlive men by less than two years on average, compared with a global average of five years.

The health and survival category saw the starkest drop, with the Republic plummeting from 54th to 96th.

This was primarily due to the sex ratio at birth, where there was a 109-notch drop to a rank of 110th in 2017, from 1 in 2016. "In most economies around the world there is a reverse gender gap with more women than men occupying these professional and technical positions".

However, the Philippines is not alone in the decline of its performance, according to the WEF. This is a slight deterioration on 2016 when the gap was 68.3 percent and in 2015, when it was 68.1 percent. "With more than 50 years passed since the inauguration of the nation's first female prime minister, maintaining its global ranking will require India to make progress with a new generation of women political leadership", the report said.

The Republic was ranked 50th for economic participation and opportunity, down a place since a year ago.

"At the current rate of progress, the global gender gap will take 100 years to close, compared to 83 last year".

China has fallen in a global ranking for gender equality for a ninth year in a row, coming in at 100 among 144 countries despite decades of economic advances, according to an worldwide study.

Ranked 100 overall, China was No. 144-dead last-for gender parity when it came to women's health.

The picture is not all bleak: the march towards gender equality in education could reach the finish line within a mere 13 years, it said.

The further away the score is from 0, the higher the "distance to parity" in the country for that sub index appears to be.

WEF said Switzerland's 10-place drop was due to a widening gender gap on the Political Empowerment subindex. It would take more than 200 years to close the economic gender gap. The health gender gap is larger than it stood in 2006.
